Randy Scott is dead. Rep. Janklow killed him. Rep. William Janklow was given only 100 days jail sentence for his crimes and could be out in 30. This can't be undone, but there are things that can be done. One thing is a boycott of the Sturgis Rally. Check out this thread on the sturgismotorcyclerally.com message board and you will see many who plan to boycott.
But a boycott is not the only option the biker community has at hand to make a difference in South Dakota Law. Some people suggest that a demonstration or series of demonstrations of some kind during the Sturgis Rally might have more impact on the legislators and people of the State of South Dakota.
An AMA representative told me when I called on the phone that they [the AMA] are against a boycott as it would punish the vendors and not address the need for legislative change to make sure this judicial nightmare doesn't happen again. I was also told that this kind of 'minimum punishment for killing a biker' judgement happens all across the country every year. And that the only reason it has come to the public's attention is the fact that it was a State Representative and former Senator at the wheel of the car that killed Randy Scott.
Here are some news articles from the AMA.
Its obvious the AMA is taking a longer view than many in the biker community. To be honest I won't be going to Sturgis ever. I live only 40 miles from Weirs Beach, the heart of Laconia Bike Week and I prefer to ride where thee are not 300,000 other bikers anyway. Too clogged up to be anything more than a traffic jam and Sturgis must be pretty much the same. But still, Sturgis has been on my futurescope for a long time. It no longer is.
