Conway, NH to Wiscasset, ME: August 9, 2003

The intersection in the center of Conway, NH. If you turn left here you can then bear left again and use West Side Road to get to North Conway, bypassing 'The Strip'. Turning left at the next block takes you up the middle of the Valley on 'The Strip', a shopping mecca. If you just keep going straight you pass out of Conway for a few miles...

Before you come to another set of lights Turning left here lets you go to North Conway by way of Redstone and the new North-South Road. We continued straight into Maine.

This is Moose Pond In the background is Shawnee Peak ski area. This is in West Bridgton, ME.

In downtown Bridgton they were celebrating Pondicherry Days. Don't ask me why they had a giant blowup orange cat's ass pointed at Main Street. I can never figure out those Bridgtonians :)

Coming into Naples we hit some traffic.

Naples is at the foot of Long Lake. It is a real tourist town and this is the hub of it all. Here is CJ looking cool.

A typical Maine Lobsterman sign. Lots of places use these to attract attention. I never saw a lobsterman play mini-golf before, but what the hell...

This fence is outside a Brew Pub in Naples. Must have been fun painting it. Looks like they were sampling their wares that day.

The marina is on your right as you leave Naples. This is Brandy Pond, opposite Long Pond just past the Naples Causeway.

A few miles further east on 302 is Sebago Lake. The parking lot was empty because the weather sucked. We stayed dry despite the dark skies.

Don't you hate it when this happens?

In North Windham we left Route 302 and turned left on 115 towards Gray, Maine.

In Gray the signs get a bit confusing...

Then they get worse. We followed the camper ahead out of town on 115 towards Yarmouth, ME.

This 15 mile stretch is more rural and it shows. The traffic is lighter and the road begins to twist a bit. Livestock is in every field along the way. Then when you get to Yarmouth you get on the highway.

After getting on Route 295 north in Yarmouth and passing through Brunswick we came into Bath, Me - the end of the only highway section on the trip. About 15 or 20 miles of highway in all.

As you cross the bridge from Bath to Woolwich you get a good view back at the Bath Iron Works - builder of a good percentage of the US Fleet.

Bath Iron Works is situated on the banks of the Kennebec River. The ocean is just a mile or so around the bend out of sight. [Bath, ME]

When you get off the bridge you are in Woolwich, ME. This is Route 1 North, just past the Taste of Maine Restaurant.

By the time we got to Wiscasset the weather improved and we had a fine cookout with our family. They all came out to see us off around 4PM.

Here's CJ at Sebago Lake on the way back home. She's participating in her favorite sport - the Long Distance Telephone Call. The weather held off getting nasty until we got home around 7:15. The skies then opened up and we watched it pour outside from the comfort and safety of our own living room. We've ridden through some torrential downpours over the years, but this one would have stopped us for a while.
Total miles ridden: about 290
